Voorstellingen van gewone mensen en dingen zijn al sinds de 17de eeuw vrij populair onder invloed van de eigentijdse Hollandse en Vlaamse schilders die als eersten het alledaagse leven tot een artistiek thema maken. Deze traditie van genrestukken is in Engeland goed gekend doordat heel wat Vlaamse en Hollandse schilders in de 17de eeuw in Engeland werken. Deze schilderijen inspireren 18de- en 19de-eeuwse Britse schilders in de keuze van hun onderwerpen. Morland komt al op vrije jonge leeftijd rechtstreeks in contact met schilderijen, vooral landschappen, van deze oude Hollandse en Vlaamse meesters. Van zijn veertien tot eenentwintig jaar helpt Morland immers mee in zijn vaders praktijk waar dergelijke schilderijen worden gerestaureerd en verkocht. Zijn liefde voor het landelijke dagelijkse leven wordt gestimuleerd door zijn vele verblijven op het platteland. In De zwijnenhoeder zien we een dagelijkse activiteit uit het landelijke leven van toen. Het tafereel is in al zijn eenvoud weergegeven. De compositie is simpel en duidelijk, zoals in Morlands overige werken, en de kleuren zijn warm. Het schilderij lijkt op korte tijd te zijn gemaakt en is niet zeer uitgewerkt. George Morland est surtout connu pour ses scènes de genre rustiques. Les représentations de personnes et de choses ordinaires sont très populaires depuis le XVIIe siècle, sous l'influence des peintres contemporains hollandais et flamands qui ont été les premiers à faire de la vie quotidienne un thème artistique. Cette tradition des peintures de genre est bien connue en Angleterre car de nombreux peintres flamands et hollandais ont travaillé en Angleterre au XVIIe siècle. Ces peintures ont inspiré les peintres britanniques des 18e et 19e siècles dans le choix de leurs sujets. Dès son plus jeune âge, Morland est entré en contact direct avec les peintures, notamment les paysages, de ces anciens maîtres hollandais et flamands. De l'âge de quatorze à vingt et un ans, Morland a aidé dans le cabinet de son père où ces peintures étaient restaurées et vendues. Son amour de la vie quotidienne rurale a été stimulé par ses nombreux séjours à la campagne. Dans Le Gardien de sanglier, nous assistons à une activité quotidienne de la vie rurale de l'époque. La scène est décrite dans toute sa simplicité. La composition est simple et claire, comme dans les autres œuvres de Morland, et les couleurs sont chaudes. La peinture semble avoir été réalisée dans un court laps de temps et n'est pas très élaborée. George Morland is best known for his rustic genre scenes. Depictions of ordinary people and things have been quite popular since the 17th century under the influence of contemporary Dutch and Flemish painters who were the first to make everyday life an artistic theme. This tradition of genre paintings is well known in England because many Flemish and Dutch painters worked in England in the 17th century. These paintings inspired 18th- and 19th-century British painters in the choice of their subjects. Morland came into direct contact with paintings, especially landscapes, by these old Dutch and Flemish masters at an early age. From the age of fourteen to twenty-one, Morland helped out in his father's practice where such paintings were restored and sold. His love of rural everyday life was stimulated by his many stays in the countryside. In The Boar Keeper we see a daily activity from rural life at the time. The scene is depicted in all its simplicity. The composition is simple and clear, as in Morland's other works, and the colours are warm.
