In Europa waren dergelijk paarden zeer populair tot ongeveer de achttiende eeuw. Daarna werden ze verkocht en verscheept naar Noord-Amerika. De Native Americans geloofden dat de gevlekte huiden magische krachten hadden. In de jaren 1930 werden deze paarden beschreven in 8 categorieën die we op het kunstwerk kunnen terugvinden. Daarnaast is een weergave van een middeleeuwse interpretatie van een luipaard te zien. In de middeleeuwen was men het erover eens dat een luipaard zeven kleuren had. Die heeft Bosmans ook afgebeeld. Bosmans verklaart de keuzen voor dergelijke thema's aan de hand van zijn fascinatie voor tradities, rituelen en gewoontes uit verschillende culturen. 'His artistic activity is motivated by an ongoing learning process: the idea of using art as a tool for continual learning. Bosmans is interested in factual surroundings, which he objectifies in order to conveive and produce art. One of the definitions of 'legend' is: Developing around particular figures, as a reult of oral and written traditions, are cycles of narratives that violate the thruth in one way or another. Throughout this whole of unverifiable addenda which can come close to having the character of a fairy tale, a historical figure evolves into a legendary one. Despite being painted with acrylic onpanel, Bosmans' Legends do not only function as paintings; they exist emphatically for the sake of communication. The Way in which people ascribe meanings to nature is a recurrent theme in Bosmans' work. In the series Skin Legends Bosmans used, for the first time, an anecdote about Appaloosa horses, which were popular in the seventeenth century during the reign of Louis XIV. These horses have a genetic aberation known as the leopard complex mutation, which is why they have spotted coats. When the Appaloosa became less fashionable during the eighteenth century, they were shipped to the Amerikas as cheap workhorses. There, they were allowed to roam in the wild, after which a particular community in North America began to capture them and breed various types of spotted horses. In the 1930s Appaloosa horses were officially recognised as a breed, subdivided into eight different types. Bosmans painted all of the breed's types for his first Legend 'without a subject': Legend: Appaloosa + Peau de Panthère. He related the Appaloosa to the medieval concept of a panther: nobody had ever seen a real panther, but they were included in bestiaries and all sorts of qualities were ascribed to them. Later he made more Legends concerning skin. Usually these deal with skin types and skin diseases of which no specimen can be obtained ('without a subject'). A similar type of narrative about something 'non-existent' elaborates in an ingenious way on the tradition of the tale, wich is after all (partly) based on the non-exitent.
