Daar treffen ze een aantal kunstenaars aan van de eerste Latemse groep: George Minne, Binus Van den Abeele en Albert Servaes. Permeke wees het luminisme steeds meer af. Geïnspireerd door Albert Servaes koos hij voor een meer expressieve, mystieke stijl. Hij nam het vissersleven als dankbaar thema.
