Het middendeel is verdwenen. Het stelde waarschijnlijk een Calvarieberg voor. Het gebruik van triptieken met dubbele luiken was in de zestiende eeuw niet ongewoon. Frans I Francken behoorde tot een omvangrijke schildersfamilie in Antwerpen. Samen met zijn broer Ambrosius verwierf hij ruime bekendheid met zijn altaarstukken. Zijn manier van schilderen met gezochte houdingen en virtuoze draperingen toont de invloed van het Italiaanse maniërisme. De dubbeltriptiek uit het Museum van Gent is het vroegst gekende werk van de kunstenaar. Hij schilderde het imposante veelluik in opdracht van de recollecten van Gent, een strenge franciscaner orde. Op het einde van de achttiende eeuw werd de kloosterorde afgeschaft en de inboedel verkocht. De verdwijning van het middenpaneel dateert vermoedelijk van die periode. De huidige opstelling toont het retabel in de eerste geopende toestand. Aangezien het middenpaneel verdwenen is, is de keerzijde van de binnenluiken met de Passie- en Verrijzenistaferelen nu aan de achterzijde te zien. Le double triptyque de Frans I Francken dépeint la vie du Christ et de la Vierge en 24 scènes distinctes. La partie centrale a disparu. Elle représentait probablement un calvaire. L'utilisation de triptyques à double volet n'est pas rare au XVIe siècle. Frans I Francken appartenait à une importante famille de peintres anversois. Avec son frère Ambrosius, il a atteint une grande renommée avec ses retables. Son style de peinture aux poses recherchées et aux drapés virtuoses montre l'influence du maniérisme italien. Le double triptyque du Musée de Gand est la plus ancienne œuvre connue de l'artiste. Il a peint l'imposant polyptyque sur commande des Récollets de Gand, un ordre franciscain strict. À la fin du XVIIIe siècle, l'ordre monastique est supprimé et son contenu est vendu. La disparition du panneau central date probablement de cette période. L'affichage actuel montre le retable dans son premier état ouvert. Le panneau central ayant disparu, on peut maintenant voir à l'arrière le revers des panneaux intérieurs avec les scènes de la Passion et de la Résurrection. The double triptych by Frans Francken I depicts the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary in 24 separate scenes. Frans Francken I came from a large family of painters in Antwerp. Together with his brother Ambrosius he became well known for his altarpieces. His style of painting with its artificial poses and extravagant drapery is linked to mannerism, a movement which dominated towards the end of the sixteenth century. The double triptych from the museum in Ghent is the earliest known work by the artist. He was commissioned to paint the impressive series of panels by the Recollects, a strict order of Franciscan monks in Ghent. The monastery was closed down at the end of the eighteenth century and the contents sold. The disappearance of the central panel probably dates back to this time. The present structure shows the altarpiece in its first opened state.
