De monumentale barokke stijl van de meester vertaalde hij naar kleine zowel mythologische als christelijk geïnspireerde kabinetstukken voor een aristocratisch publiek. Later werd hij hofschilder van de Habsburgse keizer Ferdinand II in Wenen. In 1638 trad hij in dienst bij de prins van Wales, de latere koning Charles I, waar Anthony van Dyck hofschilder was. Voor 1641 kwam hij terug naar Antwerpen, waar hij ook betrokken was bij de kunsthandel. In een apocriefe Bijbeltekst wordt verhaald hoe de kleine Johannes de Doper het Jezuskind op de vlucht naar Egypte komt bezoeken. Hij draagt een kruis en wordt vergezeld van engeltjes die Jezus een lam aanbieden. Ondanks het zorgeloos karakter van dit idyllische landschap, zinspelen het kruis en het lam reeds op zijn belangrijke taak als Verlosser. Het schilderij is geïnspireerd op De Rust tijdens de vlucht naar Egypte of De Maagd met de patrijzen (1632) van Van Dyck uit de Hermitage in Leningrad. Opvallend is de bijzondere zorg waarmee het landschap geschilderd werd. Naast Van Dyck en Rubens is hier ook de invloed zichtbaar van Titiaan, die de Vlaamse meesters niet alleen imiteerden maar ook verzamelden. Après ses débuts auprès de Peeter van Avont à Anvers, Frans Wouters entre dans l’atelier de Rubens. Il transpose le baroque monumental du maître en de petites peintures de cabinet, aux thèmes mythologiques et religieux, pour une clientèle aristocratique. Il est ensuite peintre à la cour de l’empereur Ferdinand II de Habsbourg à Vienne. En 1638, il entre à la cour du prince de Galles, futur Charles I, où Anthony van Dyck exerce la fonction de peintre. Il retourne à Anvers avant 1641, où il est actif sur le marché de l’art. Un épisode apocryphe de la fuite en Égypte s’articule autour de la visite que rend un jeune Jean-Baptiste à l’Enfant Jésus. Portant une croix, Jean-Baptiste est accompagné d’anges qui font offrande d’un agneau à Jésus. Malgré le caractère idyllique de ce paysage au rendu méticuleux, la croix et l’agneau annoncent son rôle de Sauveur. Ce tableau s’inspire d’une œuvre de Van Dyck intitulée Le repos durant la fuite en Égypte ou La Vierge aux perdrix (1632 ; auj. dans la collection de l’Ermitage). Aux influences de Van Dyck et Rubens, s’ajoute celle du Titien, que les maîtres flamands non seulement imitaient, mais collectionnaient. After beginning his career with Peeter van Avont in Antwerp, Frans Wouters became an apprentice in the studio of Rubens. He translated the monumental Baroque style of the master into smaller cabinet pieces, with both mythological and Christian-inspired themes, for an aristocratic audience. Later, he became court painter to the Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand II in Vienna. In 1638, he began working for the Prince of Wales, later King Charles I, for whom Van Dyck was a court painter. Prior to 1641, he returned to Antwerp, where he was active in the art trade. An apocryphal biblical text recounts how the young John the Baptist visited the infant Jesus during the flight into Egypt. He wore a cross and was accompanied by angels, who offered Jesus a lamb. Despite the serene nature of this idyllic landscape, the cross and the lamb already allude to his important role as Saviour. The Rest on the Flight into Egypt or The Virgin with Partridges (1632) by Anthony van Dyck in the Hermitage provided inspiration for this painting. The special care with which the landscape was painted is particularly noteworthy. In addition to Van Dyck and Rubens, the influence of Titian is also visible, whose work the Flemish masters not only imitated but also collected. In einem apokryphen Bibeltext wird berichtet, wie der kleine Johannes der Täufer das Jesuskind auf der Flucht nach Ägypten besucht. Er trägt ein Kreuz und wird von Engeln begleitet, die Jesus ein Lamm anbieten. Trotz des sorglosen Charakters der idyllischen Landschaft verweisen das Kreuz und das Lamm bereits auf seine wichtige Aufgabe als Erlöser. Frans Wouters hat sich bei dem Gemälde von Anthony van Dycks Werken Ruhe auf der Flucht nach Ägypten und Die Magd mit den Rebhühnern – zu sehen in der Eremitage in St. Petersburg –inspirieren lassen. Auffällig ist die außergewöhnliche Sorgfalt, mit der die Landschaft gemalt wurde. Es fällt besonders auf, dass die Landschaft hier mit größter Sorgfalt gemalt wurde. Neben Van Dyck und Rubens ist auch der Einfluss Tizians spürbar.
