Hetzelfde gold voor zijn opdrachten, die de kunstenaar dwongen zich te omringen met medewerkers. Het is bekend dat Jordaens het vanaf die tijd aan zijn atelier overliet om de composities die hij zelf had getekend op doek over te zetten. Toen het werk eenmaal was omgezet, nam hij het over en voltooide bepaalde delen van het geheel. Veel van de schilderijen die in samenwerking met het atelier werden vervaardigd, waren slechts herhalingen met variaties op thema's die hij voorheen had uitgewerkt, zoals De allegorie van de vruchtbaarheid. Hetzelfde geldt voor Christus en de overspelige vrouw, dat afkomstig is uit de Sint-Pietersabdij in Gent. Jordaens had dit thema reeds herhaaldelijk uitgebuit. Het thema van Christus en de overspelige vrouw uit de evangeliën van Lukas en Johannes is van groot belang in de post-tridentijnse religie. De weigering van Christus om de vrouw te oordelen volgens de Mozaïsche wet en het voorstel aan degene die nooit gezondigd heeft om de eerste steen te werpen om de zondaar te stenigen, symboliseert inderdaad de goddelijke inschikkelijkheid tegenover de fouten van de mensheid. Het museum bezit een voorbereidende tekening van Jordaens voor dit schilderij (inv. 1908-B-recto). Deze schets vertoont een gelijkaardige compositie, op enkele details na, zoals de vrouw die een mand op haar hoofd draagt, die op het voltooide schilderij ontbreken. Zoals in veel van de werken die de kunstenaar en zijn werkplaats in de jaren 1660-70 vervaardigden, is de kleurstelling donkerder, overheerst door bruin, zijn de kleurcontrasten sterker en de penseelstreken losser. Après 1640, l'année de la mort de Rubens, la renommée de Jacob Jordaens croît en importance. Il en va de même de ses commandes, ce qui contraint l’artiste à s’entourer de collaborateurs. On sait que dès ce moment, Jordaens laisse le soin à son atelier de transposer sur toile les compositions dont il réalise lui-même le dessin. L’œuvre transposée, il reprend et achève certaines parties de l’ensemble. Bon nombre des tableaux produits en collaboration avec l’atelier ne sont plus que la répétition avec variantes de thèmes déjà exploités comme L’Allégorie de la Fécondité. Il en va de même pour Le Christ et la femme adultère qui provient de l’Abbaye Saint Pierre de Gand. Jordaens avait déjà exploité ce thème à plusieurs reprises. La thématique du Christ et de la femme adultère issu des évangiles de Luc et Jean revêt une grande importance dans la religion post-tridentine. En effet le refus du Christ de juger la femme selon la loi mosaïque et suggérant à celui qui n’a jamais péché de jeter la première pierre pour lapider la pécheresse symbolise la mansuétude divine face aux fautes de l’humanité. Le musée possède un dessin préparatoire de Jordaens pour ce tableau (inv. 1908-B-recto). Cette esquisse montre une composition similaire, à l'exception de quelques détails, comme la femme portant un panier sur la tête, qui manquent dans le tableau. Comme dans de nombreuses œuvres produites par l'artiste et son atelier dans les années 1660 et 1670, la palette de couleurs est plus sombre, dominée par le brun, les contrastes de couleurs sont plus forts et les coups de pinceau plus lâches.Le musée possède un dessin préparatoire, de la main de Jordaens, pour cette toile Cette esquisse présente une composition semblable, à quelques détails près, telle cette femme portant un panier sur sa tête, absente de la toile achevée. Comme dans bon nombre d’œuvres produites par l’artiste et son atelier au cours des années 1660 à 1670, le coloris est plus sombre, dominé par le brun, les oppositions chromatiques sont plus fortement contrastées et la touche plus lâche.
