Het grote altaarstuk De presentatie van Jezus in de tempel uit 1767 is afkomstig uit de voormalige dominicanenkerk in Gent. Het thema gaat terug op een verhaal uit het evangelie van Lucas (2:22-40). De oude man Simeon, hoewel geen hogepriester, wordt meestal voorgesteld met bisschopsgewaad en mijter, zoals hier. Hij draagt het Kind Jezus op aan God en herkent in hem de Messias. De opdracht is een joods gebruik dat samenvalt met de zuivering van de moeder. De armen brengen dan een koppel tortelduiven mee als offer. De kleurenrijkdom, de vernuftige compositie en de krachtige toets situeren dit werk in het verlengde van de Antwerpse barok. Het schilderij is afkomstig van het dominicanenklooster in Gent. Pierre Joseph Verhaghen d’Aarschot fut un des derniers représentants de la tradition de Rubens, qui perdura dans les Pays-Bas du Sud tard dans le XVIIIe siècle. Le grand retable La Présentation au temple de 1767 provient de l’ancienne église dominicaine de Gand. Le thème revient sur le récit tiré de l’Évangile de Luc (2:22-40). La richesse des couleurs, la composition ingénieuse et la touche puissante situent cette œuvre dans le prolongement du baroque anversois.
