Deze is vergezeld van een vers, links in het Latijn en rechts in het Nederlands. Op een zwarte doodskist met wit kruis liggen een schedel en twee gekruiste beenderen met daarboven een scepter en een schop. Op de achterzijde van deze panelen die aan beide zijden beschilderd zijn, bevindt zich een afbeelding van Johannes de Doper (links) en een onbekende schenker (rechts). De Gentse schilder-dichter Lucas d’Heere, was vermoedelijk lid van de door Filips de Schone opgerichte rederijkerskamer De Balsemblomme, waaraan de kunstenaar zelf een prominente rol toekende bij de intrede van Willem van Oranje in 1577. De zinspreuk bij de vanitas is conform aan de smaak en de traditie van de Vlaamse retorische schilders. In vrije vertaling luidt ze als volgt: ‘O Heere, uw kruis confronteert mij, de miserabele, met mijn misdaden en zorgt ervoor dat mijn leven mij mishaagt. Maar uw zoete woord ‘het is volbracht’ verheugt mijn hart en geeft mij nieuw leven, opdat ik de moed niet zou verliezen, ik die bezwaard ben door schuld’. Ce triptyque, dont le panneau central est manquant, est l’œuvre d’un maître du cercle de Lucas d’Heere. Fermé, il montre une vanité portant une devise en latin à gauche et en néerlandais à droite. Une tête de mort, surmontée d’un sceptre et d’une pelle, est posée sur un cercueil noir avec une croix blanche. Au dos de l’un des panneaux, qui sont peints sur les deux faces, on trouve les portraits de Jean-Baptiste (gauche) et d’un donateur anonyme (droite). Originaire de Gand, le peintre-poète Lucas d’Heere fut probablement membre de la chambre de rhétorique dite « De Balsemblomme », établie par Philippe le Bel. L’artiste a conféré à la société un rôle de premier plan en y faisant entrer Guillaume Ier d’Orange en 1577. La devise reflète le goût et la tradition des peintres rhétoriciens flamands. Son adaptation libre se lit comme suit : « Ô Christ, ta croix me confronte, moi le misérable, avec mes crimes et je suis déçu de ma vie. Mais tes douces paroles « c’est la fin » réjouissent mon cœur et me redonnent vie et courage – moi qui suis tenaillé par la culpabilité. » This triptych, which is missing the central panel, comes from an anonymous master from the circle of Lucas d’Heere. When closed, it shows a vanitas, which is accompanied by a verse in Latin on the left and in Dutch on the right. A skull and crossbones, surmounted by a sceptre and a shovel, is depicted atop a black coffin with a white cross. On the back of these panels, which are painted on both sides, is a picture of John the Baptist (left) and an unidentified donor (right). The Ghent painter-poet Lucas d’Heere was probably a member of the Chamber of Rhetoric known as De Balsemblomme, which was established by Philip the Fair. The artist accorded the society a prominent role in the entry of William of Orange in 1577. The motto on the vanitas complies with the taste and tradition of the rhetorical Flemish painters. In a free translation it reads: ‘O Lord, your cross confronts me, the miserable, with my crimes, and leaves me dissatisfied with my life.
