Het schilderij is een zeldzaam aanknopingspunt voor onderzoek naar Josina Margareta Weenix, een tot nu toe weinig bekende kunstenaar. Weenix groeide op in een Amsterdamse schildersfamilie. Zowel haar grootvader, Jan Baptist Weenix, als haar vader, Jan Weenix, waren prominente stillevenschilders, gespecialiseerd in realistische jacht- en dierenstillevens. De dialoog met Stilleven met gevogelte (inv. 1914-CO), een werk van haar grootvader, nodigt uit tot reflectie op hoe zij zich verhield tot het artistieke familie-erfgoed. Cette nature morte détaille avec minutie un riche ensemble de fruits mûrs : des raisins blancs et noirs, des pêches, un melon coupé en deux, des prunes et des noisettes. L’artiste fait ressortir les différentes textures, notamment l’éclat des grains de raisin et le velouté des pêches, ce qui souligne son savoir-faire. Les feuilles flétries symbolisent la fugacité de l’existence, un thème récurrent dans les natures mortes. Au fond à gauche, une subtile trouée ouvre sur un paysage verdoyant, ce qui donne de la profondeur au tableau et crée un contraste avec l’abondance du premier plan. Tandis que les fruits représentent les plaisirs des sens, la vue invite à la méditation sur le temps qui passe et la fragilité des choses. Nature morte avec des fruits et une vue est la première œuvre signée d’une femme peintre dans la section Art ancien de la collection du MSK. Cette récente acquisition contribue à revaloriser les femmes artistes et élargit les perspectives du narratif développé à propos de l’histoire de l’art. Le tableau fournit un excellent point de départ à l’étude de Josina Margareta Weenix, une artiste peu connue jusqu’ici. Weenix a grandi à Amsterdam, dans une famille de peintres. Son grand-père, Jan Baptist Weenix, et son père, Jan Weenix, étaient tous deux d’éminents peintres de natures mortes, spécialisés dans les natures mortes réalistes représentant du gibier et des animaux. Le dialogue avec Nature morte avec gibier à plume (inv. 1914-CO), une œuvre de son grand-père, invite à la réflexion sur le rapport qu’elle entretenait avec l’héritage artistique familial. This still life shows, in meticulous detail, a rich array of ripe fruit: white and blue grapes, peaches, a sliced melon, plums and hazelnuts. The artist emphasizes the varying textures – the gloss of the grapes, the soft down of the peaches – thereby demonstrating her technical mastery. Wilted leaves allude to the transience of life, a familiar theme in still life painting. In the background, at the upper left, a subtle vista opens of a park-like landscape, adding depth and providing a counterpoint to the abundance in the foreground. While the fruit evokes sensual pleasure, the distant view invites reflection on impermanence and the passage of time. Still Life with Fruit and a Vista is the first signed work by a female painter in the MSK’s Old Masters collection. This recent acquisition contributes to the growing reappraisal of women artists and broadens perspectives within the art historical narrative. The painting also serves as a rare starting point for research on Josina Margareta Weenix, a largely overlooked artist. Weenix grew up in an Amsterdam family of painters: both her grandfather, Jan Baptist Weenix, and her father, Jan Weenix, were renowned still-life painters, known especially for their realistic hunting and animal scenes.
