Het werd ontdekt tijdens de voorbereidingen voor de monografische tentoonstelling over de caravaggist Theodoor Rombouts (1597-1637) (voorjaar 2023, MSK Gent). Omdat het werk sinds zijn creatie niet geheel ongehavend de eeuwen is doorgekomen, onderging het recent een uitgebreide restauratiebehandeling. Van de restauratie werd gebruik gemaakt om het schilderij ook materiaaltechnisch door te lichten. Melchior de la Mars is zonder twijfel een van de meest tot de verbeelding sprekende artistieke figuren die in de vroege 17e eeuw actief was in Gent. Helaas zijn extreem weinig gegevens over zijn levensloop voorhanden. We weten dat hij tussen 1619 en 1621 werkte in Gent waar hij de indrukwekkende Besnijdenis van Christus (1621, Augustijnenklooster Gent) schilderde. In de periode 1626-27 vinden we hem terug in Brussel. De la Mars’ corpus aan schilderijen, alle religieus van aard, is op één hand te tellen. Zijn benadering valt op door de aparte en bijzonder persoonlijke vormentaal waarbij hij een laat-maniëristische manier van werken combineert met de door Caravaggio (1571-1610) geïnspireerde stijl. Het onderwerp van dit schilderij – de heilige Sebastiaan die bevrijd wordt door de Romeinse weduwe Irene en haar dienares – verwijst naar het verhaal van de lijfwacht van de Romeinse keizer Diocletianus (ca. 243-316) die omwille van zijn christelijk geloof met pijlen doorboord werd maar wonderwel de uitvoering van zijn doodvonnis overleefde. De voorstelling met Irene was geliefd in de 17e eeuw omdat ze symbool stond voor de christelijke naastenliefde en de rol van de vrouw als zorgende beklemtoonde, zoals die tijdens de contrareformatie werd vooropgesteld. Tegelijk kan het tafereel inhoudelijk verbonden worden met de rol van pestheilige die Sebastiaan na zijn dood kreeg toebedeeld. Dat zien we bijvoorbeeld aan de suggestie van een stuiptrekkende beweging en de verkleuring van zijn ledematen – symptomen van de ziekte – en de weergave van een ongewone lucht op de achtergrond. Deze verwijst wellicht naar dreigende natuurfenomenen die men in de 17e eeuw in verband bracht met de pest. In de jaren 1620, de periode waarin dit schilderij moet ontstaan zijn, werd Europa – ook Gent – geteisterd door uitbraken van de dodelijke ziekte. Het schilderij zorgde toen ongetwijfeld voor troost en hoop. Grâce au généreux soutien des Amis du Musée, le MSK a pu adjoindre en 2023 à sa collection cette œuvre extrêmement rare de la main de l’énigmatique caravagiste Melchior de la Mars. Elle a été découverte pendant les préparatifs de l’exposition monographique consacrée à un autre caravagiste, Theodoor Rombouts (1597-1637) (printemps 2023, MSK Gent). Comme l’œuvre a subi les outrages du temps depuis sa création, elle a récemment été restaurée en profondeur. À cette occasion, le tableau a fait l’objet d’une étude des techniques et matériaux utilisés pour sa réalisation. Melchior de la Mars est sans conteste une des personnalités artistiques les plus fascinantes qui a été active à Gand au début du XVIIe siècle. Nous disposons malheureusement de très peu d’informations sur sa carrière. Nous savons néanmoins qu’entre 1619 et 1621, il a travaillé à Gand, où il a peint l’impressionnante scène de La Circoncision du Christ (1621, couvent des Augustins, Gand). En 1626-27, nous le retrouvons à Bruxelles. Le corpus de tableaux de De la Mars, tous de nature religieuse, se compte sur les doigts d’une main. Son approche se caractérise par un langage formel à part, tout à fait personnel, où il combine une facture relevant du maniérisme tardif avec un style s’inspirant du Caravage (1571-1610). Le sujet de ce tableau – saint Sébastien secouru par la veuve romaine Irène et sa servante – fait référence à l’histoire du garde du corps de l’empereur romain Dioclétien (vers 243-316), qui fut condamné à être transpercé de flèches à cause de sa foi chrétienne, mais survécut miraculeusement à la peine capitale. La représentation de sainte Irène était très appréciée au XVIIe siècle, parce qu’elle symbolisait la charité chrétienne et soulignait le rôle de soignante de la femme, tel qu’il a été mis en avant pendant la contre-réforme. Thématiquement, la scène peut en même temps être rapprochée du rôle de protecteur contre la peste qui fut attribué à saint Sébastien après sa mort. Cela se voit par exemple au mouvement de convulsion qui est suggéré et à la pâleur des membres – symptômes de la maladie – ainsi qu’au ciel étrange qui est représenté à l’arrière-plan. Ce ciel fait vraisemblablement allusion aux phénomènes naturels menaçants que l’on associait à la peste au XVIIe siècle. Dans les années 1620, période au cours de laquelle ce tableau a dû voir le jour, plusieurs épidémies de peste ont frappé l’Europe – et donc aussi Gand. Dans ces circonstances, le tableau devait incontestablement apporter réconfort et espoir. The MSK was able to add this exceptionally rare painting to its collection in 2023 thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Museum. By the enigmatic Caravaggist artist Melchior de la Mars, it was discovered during the preparations for the museum’s monographic exhibition on Theodoor Rombouts (1597-1637), which was held in spring 2023. Because the work had not survived the centuries unscathed, it recently underwent an extensive restoration treatment. This was also an opportunity to examine the painting from a material perspective. Melchior de la Mars was undoubtedly one of the most imaginative artists working in Ghent during the 17th century. Unfortunately, very little biographical information survives. The artist is known to have worked in the city between 1619 and 1621, when he painted the impressive Circumcision of Christ (1621, Augustinian Monastery, Ghent). He was working in Brussels during the period 1626-27. De la Mars’ corpus of paintings, all religious in nature, can be counted on one hand. His distinctive and idiosyncratic visual language, which combines a late-Mannerist technique with the style inspired by Caravaggio (1571-1610), is particularly noteworthy. The painting’s subject – Saint Sebastian being released by the Roman widow Irene and her servant –refers to the story of the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s (c. 243-316) bodyguard, Sebastian, who was sentenced to death for professing his Christian faith. He miraculously survived being shot by arrows. The scene depicting Irene was popular in the 17th century because it symbolised Christian charity and emphasised the role of women as carers, as prioritised during the Counter Reformation. At the same time, the tableau’s significance is also linked to the powers later ascribed to Sebastian. He became a saint to whom people prayed for protection against the plague. We see this, for example, in the suggestion of a convulsion and his discoloured limbs – two symptoms of the disease – and the unusual sky in the background. This might allude to the menacing natural phenomena that people associated with the plague in the 17th century. In the 1620s, the period when this painting must have been created, Europe – including Ghent – suffered multiple outbreaks of the deadly disease.
