Na zijn terugkeer uit Rome – tijdens de jaren 1660 hét centrum in Europa van de barokke beeldhouwkunst – werd hij de belangrijkste en meest veelzijdige beeldhouwer van het Prinsbisdom Luik. Maar zijn reputatie reikte verder. Ook in Vlaanderen zijn werken van hem in situ aanwezig. Zijn absolute meesterwerk bevindt zich in de kooromgang van de Gentse Sint-Baafskathedraal: het monumentale, witmarmeren praalgraf van bisschop Eugène Albert d’Allamont (1627-1673) dat getuigt van expressiviteit en barokke bewogenheid. Die expressiviteit van bewegingen en pathos is terug te vinden in deze bijzondere bozzetto. Het is een in terracotta gemaakte voorstudie voor het beeld van Jakobus de Mindere (1691) dat deel uitmaakt van de imposante serie heiligenbeelden in hout in de Sint-Jacobskerk in Luik. L’artiste liégeois Jean Delcour était actif dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux. Après son retour de Rome – le centre européen de la sculpture baroque dans les années 1660 – il est devenu le sculpteur le plus important et le plus polyvalent de la Principauté de Liège. Mais sa réputation ne s’arrête pas là. Des œuvres de lui sont également présentes in situ en Flandre. Son chef-d’œuvre absolu se trouve dans le déambulatoire de la cathédrale Saint-Bavon de Gand : le monumental mausolée en marbre blanc de l’évêque Eugène Albert d’Allamont (1627-1673), qui témoigne de l’expressivité et du dynamisme baroque. Cette expressivité du mouvement et du pathos se reflète dans ce bozzetto particulier. Il s’agit d’une étude préliminaire réalisée en terre cuite pour la statue de Jacques le Mineur (1691), qui fait partie de l’imposante série de statues de saints en bois de l’église Saint-Jacques à Liège.
