Toen Aegus zijn zwangere vrouw Aethra verliet, verborg hij zijn zwaard en sandalen onder een rotsblok. Hij zei tegen haar hem zijn zoon te zenden wanneer deze sterk genoeg zou zijn om eigenhandig het rotsblok te verplaatsen. Aan het zwaard en de sandalen zou hij zijn zoon herkennen. La peinture représente l'histoire mythologique de Thésée, le fils du légendaire roi d'Athènes, Égée. Quand Égée a quitté sa femme enceinte Aethra, il a caché son épée et ses sandales sous un rocher. Il lui dit de lui envoyer son fils quand il serait assez fort pour déplacer le rocher de ses propres mains. Il reconnaîtrait son fils à son épée et à ses sandales. The painting depicts the mythological story of Theseus, the son of the legendary king of Athens, Aegeus. When Aegus left his pregnant wife Aethra, he hid his sword and sandals under a rock. He told her to send him his son when he was strong enough to move the rock with his own hands.
