Meer dan gelijk welk ander beeld verwerkt Rosso de voorstelling van het Joodse jongetje steeds opnieuw. Regelmatig schenkt hij een exemplaar aan zijn vrienden, in dit geval aan mevrouw Chabrier, waarschijnlijk de echtgenote van componist Emmanuel Chabrier met wie Rosso contact onderhoudt. Over de identiteit van dit somber ogende kind is niets gekend. Met zijn neergeslagen ogen lijkt het over iets te piekeren. De kinderjaren worden steeds gezien als een onbekommerde tijd, maar deze gaat even goed gepaard met universele emoties van verdriet, eenzaamheid en gemis. Medardo Rosso passe une grande partie de sa carrière à Paris, où il se profile aux côtés d’Auguste Rodin comme un des représentants les plus authentiques de la sculpture des débuts de la modernité. Plus que toute autre sculpture, Rosso travaille et retravaille sans cesse la représentation du petit garçon juif. Il en offre régulièrement un exemplaire à ses amis, en l’occurrence à madame Chabrier, vraisemblablement l’épouse du compositeur Emmanuel Chabrier avec qui Rosso est en contact. Nous ignorons l’identité de cet enfant au regard sombre. Les yeux baissés, il semble ruminer quelque chose. L’enfance est souvent considérée comme le temps de l’insouciance, mais c’est aussi celui d’émotions universelles comme le chagrin, la solitude et le manque. Medardo Rosso spent most of his career in Paris, where he established himself, along with Auguste Rodin, as one of the most authentic representatives of early Modern sculpture. More than any of his other sculptures, Rosso kept on reworking this figure of the Jewish boy. He regularly donated versions to friends, in this case to Mrs. Chabrier, probably the wife of the composer Emmanuel Chabrier, with whom Rosso kept in touch. We know nothing about the identity of the sad-looking child. His downcast eyes seem to suggest he is worried about something.
