Tijdens zijn Belgische jaren (tot 1877) ontplooit hij zich als zelfstandig beeldhouwer. Typerend voor deze periode is het geïndividualiseerde karakter dat hij aan een reeks vrouwelijke bustes in terracotta weet te geven, door de aarde net voor het bakken te herwerken. Hoewel hij doorgaans hetzelfde model gebruikt, zijn er kleine verschillen tussen de verschillende bustes, voornamelijk in het kapsel. Waar elders druivenranken in het haar verwerkt worden, duiken in dit mooie exemplaar seringen op. Après s’être formé chez Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, Rodin suit en 1871 son maître à Bruxelles où ils participent tous deux à la décoration de la Bourse. Pendant ses années belges (jusqu’en 1877), Rodin évolue pour devenir un sculpteur à part entière. Un élément typique de cette période est le caractère individualisé qu’il arrive à donner à une série de bustes féminins en terre cuite, en retravaillant la terre juste avant la cuisson. Bien qu’il ait presque toujours recours au même modèle, on relève de petites différences entre les bustes, principalement dans la coiffure. Tantôt, ce sont des pampres qui se mêlent à la chevelure ; tantôt, comme dans ce superbe exemplaire, ce sont des lilas. After his training under Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, Rodin followed his tutor to Brussels in 1871, where they worked together on the ornamentation of the Brussels Stock Exchange. During his Belgian years (until 1877), Rodin gained artistic independence as a sculptor. Typical for this period are the individual characters of the series of terracotta female busts, which he managed to give them by reworking the clay, just before the sculptures were fired. Even though he generally used the same model, the busts are all slightly different, especially in the way they wear their hair.
