Eerstgenoemde was een ‘académicien’, een traditionalist, decennialang directeur van de Antwerpse Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten, gespecialiseerd in de portret- en historieschilderkunst: bijbelse, mythologische, geschiedkundige en religieuze thema’s. Servranckx daarentegen staat te boek als één van de vroegste abstracte kunstenaars in België. En toch: diverse jeugdtekeningen van Verlat uit de MSK-collectie, komen uit Servranckx’ eclectische verzameling. Hoewel hij zelf een totaal andere richting uitging, wist hij met andere woorden wel degelijk een goede tekening te appreciëren, zelfs als deze van een oerconservatieve kunstenaar kwam. Verlat maakte de tekening tijdens zijn studiejaren aan de Antwerpse academie. Ze illustreert een belangrijk aspect van het tekenonderwijs toen, nl. het tekenen naar ‘levend’ model (lees: mannelijk naakt). Le premier était un ‘académicien’, un traditionaliste, directeur pendant des décennies de l'Académie royale des Beaux-Arts d'Anvers, spécialisé dans le portrait et la peinture d'histoire : thèmes bibliques, mythologiques, historiques et religieux. Servranckx, quant à lui, est connu comme l'un des premiers artistes abstraits de Belgique. Et pourtant : plusieurs dessins de jeunesse de Verlat dans la collection du MSK proviennent de la collection éclectique de Servranckx. En d'autres termes, bien qu'il ait lui-même pris une direction complètement différente, il savait certainement comment apprécier un bon dessin, même s'il provenait d'un artiste très conservateur. Verlat a réalisé ce dessin pendant ses années d'études à l'Académie d'Anvers. Il illustre un aspect important de l'enseignement du dessin à cette époque, à savoir le dessin d'après le modèle ‘vivant’ (c'est-à-dire des nus masculins)‘’.
