Het is een markant voorbeeld van Minnes vroeg-symbolistische oeuvre, waarin zijn fascinatie voor de beeldtaal van de middeleeuwse beeldhouw- en boekkunst tot uiting komt. Daarnaast is het, zoals veel van zijn werken uit het midden van de jaren 1890, sterk verwant aan de sfeer en de personages in het toneelwerk van Maurice Maeterlinck. Biddende non kondigt latere beelden als Johannes de Doper (1895; inv. 1921-CH) en De drie heilige vrouwen bij het graf (1896; inv. 2016-GK) aan. Louter vormelijk staan Biddende non en Johannes de Doper het dichtst bij elkaar: in Johannes de Doper hernam Minne immers de houding van het hoofd en de handen uit Biddende non. Telkens streefde Minne naar een expressieve uitdrukking, waarbij de diepe groeven in de gelaatsuitdrukking de intensiteit van de voorstelling verhogen. Deze grafische karakteristiek vinden we eveneens terug in het beeld De drie heilige vrouwen bij het graf. Vergelijkbaar met het laatst vermelde beeld is verder het in een kapmantel gehulde vrouwentype, en de aanzet van de plooienval, elementen die Minne in dezelfde periode ook in tekeningen en illustraties uitwerkte en waarvoor waarschijnlijk de pleurants model stonden die Claus Sluter op het einde van de veertiende eeuw voor het graf van de Bourgondische hertog Jan zonder Vrees in Dijon maakte. La représentation d'une religieuse en prière de George Minne, dont on connaît également des versions en bois et en bronze, a été réalisée en 1894. C'est un exemple frappant des premiers travaux symbolistes de Minnes, dans lesquels s'exprime sa fascination pour le langage visuel de la sculpture médiévale et des arts du livre. En outre, comme beaucoup de ses œuvres du milieu des années 1890, elle est fortement liée à l'atmosphère et aux personnages des pièces de Maurice Maeterlinck. Réligieuse orante annonce des images ultérieures telles que Saint Jean-Baptiste (1895; inv. 1921-CH) et Les trois saintes femmes au tombeau (1896 ; inv. 2016-GK). D'un point de vue purement formel, la Nonne religieuse et Jean-Baptiste sont les plus proches l'un de l'autre : dans Jean-Baptiste, Minne a en effet repris la pose de la tête et des mains de la nonne religieuse. Dans chaque cas, Minne s'est efforcé d'obtenir une expression expressive, les profonds sillons de l'expression faciale renforçant l'intensité de la représentation. Cette caractéristique graphique se retrouve également dans la sculpture Les trois saintes femmes au tombeau. Comparable à cette dernière image, on trouve en outre le type de femme, vêtue d'un manteau à capuchon, et le début de la trappe pliante, éléments que Minne a également élaborés dans des dessins et des illustrations de la même période et dont s'inspirent probablement les pleurants que Claus Sluter a réalisés pour la tombe de Jean sans Peur à Dijon. George Minnes's depiction of a praying nun, of which versions in wood and bronze are also known, was made in 1894. In each case, Minne strived for an expressive expression, whereby the deep grooves in the facial expression heighten the intensity of the representation. This graphic characteristic is also found in the sculpture The Three Holy Women at the Tomb.
