Nicolas III de Catinat de la Fauconnerie, Seigneur de Saint-Gratien was aanvankelijk advocaat, maar maakte daarna een militaire carrière. Hij nam bijvoorbeeld deel aan de Nederlandse Oorlog en de Successieoorlog van de Palts. In 1688 was hij bijvoorbeeld betrokken bij de succesvolle bezetting van Philippsburg. In 1693 werd hij benoemd tot maarschalk van Frankrijk voor zijn militaire diensten. In hetzelfde jaar zegevierde hij in de Slag bij Marsaglia in Boven-Italië over de geallieerde troepen van Spanje, Engeland en de troepen van het Heilige Roomse Rijk onder leiding van Prins Eugene van Savoye. De lauwerkrans die het portret van Catinat omlijst, is verstrengeld met een lint waarop de locaties van zijn militaire veldslagen en overwinningen staan vermeld. De slag bij Marsaglia wordt extra benadrukt door de toevoeging van de datum 1693. Het portretmedaillon troont op een sokkel waarop infanteristen en kanonniers staan afgebeeld die de zegevierende maarschalk juichend begroeten. Hieronder staat het wapen van Saint-Gratien. Wapens, schrijfgerei en (oorlogstactische) meetinstrumenten - zoals een telescoop en een halfrond instrument of grafometer - zijn op en voor de sokkel gedrapeerd. Daarnaast is er een stapel boeken met de namen van oude auteurs, van wie velen zich ook bezighielden met de geschiedenis en theorie van oorlog, zoals Vegetius of Frontinus. La bataille de Marsaglia est particulièrement mise en valeur par l'ajout de la date de 1693. Le médaillon du portrait trône sur un socle représentant des fantassins et des cannoniers en liesse saluant le maréchal victorieux. En dessous se trouvent les armoiries de Saint-Gratien. Sur le socle et devant celui-ci sont disposés des armes, des instruments d'écriture et de mesure (de tactique de guerre), tels qu'une lunette et un instrument semi-circulaire ou un graphomètre.
