Typerend voor zijn werk is de bevreemdende combinatie van bizarre figuren en hun onbestemde, vaak desolate omgeving. Redons grafische meesterschap blijkt uit de abstraherende lijnvoering, de behandeling van het clair-obscur en de diepe zwarten. De map omvat een omslag met verantwoording van de druk en zes lithografieën op chine appliqué. Elke prent draagt een enigmatische titel. Samen vormen de titels een gedicht: 1. Dans mon rêve, je vis au ciel un visage de mystère [In mijn droom zag ik aan de hemel een mysterieus gezicht] / 2. La fleur du marécage, une tête humaine et triste [De moerasbloem, een triest menselijk hoofd] / 3. Un fou dans un morne paysage [Een gek in een doods landschap] / 4. Il y eut aussi des êtres embryonnaires [Er waren ook embryonale wezens] / 5. Un étrange jongleur [Een vreemde evenwichtskunstenaar] / 6. Au réveil j’aperçus la Déesse de l’Intelligible au profil sévère et dur [Bij het ontwaken zag ik de godin van het begrijpelijke in een streng en hard profiel]. In 1886 toonde Redon de map op de tentoonstelling van de Brusselse kunstkring Les Vingt. De fantastische beeldenwereld van de kunstenaar, zijn beheersing van het zwart en zijn grafische métier vormden een inspiratiebron voor de leden van de kunstkring, vooral voor James Ensor. Ensor, die met Redon een fascinatie voor Goya gemeen had, was in deze periode vooral als tekenaar actief en werkte aan de reeks De aureolen van Christus, waarvan het Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent twee grootformaat tekeningen bewaart. Mogelijk werkte het seriële karakter van Redons werk inspirerend voor Ensor. Gelijklopend is zeker hun beider fascinatie voor de expressiemogelijkheden van licht en de voorkeur voor lichtdonker-effecten. Er zijn ook iconografische parallellen: hun fascinatie voor fantastiek, voor literatuur (Edgar Allan Poe) en voor de verhalen in de Bijbel. Het album verscheen in februari 1885, werd gedrukt door Lemercier et Cie in Parijs en gedistribueerd door L. Dumont, eveneens gevestigd in Parijs. De reeks kende succes en werd herdrukt op een oplage van 25 exemplaren, die volgens André Mellerio van mindere kwaliteit is. Het album in de Gentse verzameling is een van de 50 exemplaren van de eerste druk. In de tweede druk is in de tweede plaat een zwarte vlek te zien op de rand van het kalotje van de figuur; deze vlek ontbreekt in het Gentse album. L'imagerie fantastique de l'artiste, sa maîtrise du noir et son métier de graphiste ont inspiré les membres du cercle artistique, notamment James Ensor. Ensor, qui partageait avec Redon une fascination pour Goya, est surtout actif comme dessinateur à cette époque et travaille à la série Les auréoles du Christ, dont le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand conserve deux dessins de grand format. Il est possible que la nature sérielle du travail de Redon ait inspiré Ensor. Leur fascination mutuelle pour les possibilités expressives de la lumière et leur préférence pour les effets clairs-obscurs sont certainement similaires. Il existe également des parallèles iconographiques : leur fascination pour le fantastique, la littérature (Edgar Allan Poe) et les histoires de la Bible.
