Nochtans heeft hij zijn leven lang intensief getekend. In dit schetsboekblad is het bovenste deel een studie voor het schilderij Perspective: Le balcon de Manet uit 1950 waarvan het museum de tweede versie bezit. Uit de vergelijking van de tekening en het schilderij blijkt dat Magritte eerst slechts twee doodskisten voorzag, waarbij de ene kist op de schoot van de ander zit. In het schilderij volgde hij de oorspronkelijke compositie van Manet meer nauwgezet met een zittende ‘figuur’ en verschillende staande ‘figuren’ erachter. Centraal op het blad – en ondersteboven – is de buste van een gemaskerde man te zien met naast hem het opschrift ‘Paris’. Deze voorstelling werkte Magritte uit in de gouache Flûte uit 1948 (privéverzameling). Onderaan tekende hij verschillende doodskisten in een verkort perspectief, misschien een studie naar Madame Récamier van Jacques-Louis David (privéverzameling), een ander werk uit de reeks ‘Perspectives’. Op de achterzijde van het schetsblad staan veertien studies. Les dessins de René Magritte ne sont pas aussi connus que son œuvre peinte. Pourtant, il a dessiné intensivement tout au long de sa vie. Dans cette feuille de carnet de croquis, la partie supérieure est une étude pour le tableau Perspective : Le balcon de Manet de 1950 dont le musée de Gand possède la deuxième version. En comparant le dessin et la peinture, il apparaît que Magritte ne prévoyait initialement que deux cercueils, l'un assis sur les genoux de l'autre. Dans ce tableau, il a suivi de plus près la composition originale de Manet avec une "figure" assise et plusieurs "figures" debout derrière elle. Au centre de la feuille - et à l'envers - se trouve le buste d'un homme masqué avec, à côté de lui, l'inscription "Paris". Magritte a élaboré cette représentation dans la gouache Flûte de 1948 (collection privée). En bas, il a dessiné plusieurs cercueils dans une perspective raccourcie, peut-être une étude de Madame Récamier par Jacques-Louis David (collection privée), une autre œuvre de la série "Perspectives". Au verso de la feuille de croquis, il y a quatorze études. René Magritte's drawings are not as well-known as his painted oeuvre. Yet he drew intensively throughout his life.
