Vandaag geniet hij vooral bekendheid als tekenaar en graficus. De kunstenaar maakte meer dan duizend gravures waaruit zijn grondige kennis blijkt van de Romeinse architectuur doorheen de eeuwen. In zijn werk zijn de gebouwen minutieus weergegeven maar tegelijk evoceren de met planten overwoekerde ruïnes op poëtische wijze het verloop der tijden. Deze melancholische invalshoek, die de romantiek aankondigt, vinden we in hoofdzaak terug in zijn imaginaire werk zoals in de bekende reeks Carceri (Kerkers). Het architectuurcapriccio dat door een privéverzamelaar in depot is gegeven aan het museum, staat dicht bij de beeldenwereld van de Carceri, bijvoorbeeld in de suggestie van het horror vacui en de beklemming die uitgaat van de accumulatie van architectuurelementen. Deze tekening maakt deel uit van een vriendenalbum dat in 1820 werd aangeboden aan Pierre Jacques Goethgebuer, architect en professor aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Gent. Giovanni Battista Piranesi était un artiste, un architecte, un archéologue, un polémiste et un marchand de gravures et d'antiquités. Aujourd'hui, il est surtout connu comme dessinateur et graphiste. L’artiste a réalisé plus de mille gravures qui témoignent de sa connaissance approfondie de l'architecture romaine à travers les siècles. Dans son travail, les bâtiments sont minutieusement rendus, mais en même temps, les ruines, envahies par les plantes, évoquent le passage du temps de manière poétique. Cette approche mélancolique, qui annonce l'ère romantique, se retrouve principalement dans ses œuvres imaginaires telles que la célèbre série Carceri (Donjons). Le Capriccio architectural, qui a été confié au musée par un collectionneur privé, est proche de l'univers pictural des Carceri, par exemple dans la suggestion de l'horror vacui et de l'oppression émanant de l'accumulation d'éléments architecturaux.
