Historisch hangt de tekening samen met grafisch werk van William Hogarth. Daarenboven vormt dit werk een interessante schakel tussen het werk van James Ensor en de Britse sociale en politieke satirische kunstenaars die hem zo sterk beïnvloedden, met name Thomas Rowlandson, Hogarth en Gillray zelf. Het werk dateert vermoedelijk van de laatste levensjaren van de kunstenaar. In 1894 maakt het toonaangevende Belgische tijdschrift L’art moderne gewag van het verband tussen Ensor en Gillray. Deze opinie deelt Emile Verhaeren wanneer hij over Ensor schrijft in 1908.
