Op dat ogenblik stond zijn werk in het teken van het ‘zwart’: in zijn houtskool- en potloodtekeningen en zijn lithografieën tastte hij de intensiteit van tonen van de kleur zwart af. Redon schreef hierover zelf: ‘Die vreemde lithografieën, vaak somber, duister en met een weinig verleidelijke uitstraling, verwijzen naar de geest van de stilte.’ Na 1899 ruilde Redon de monochrome grafiek voor een meerkleurig universum dat van een mysterieuze animus doordrongen bleef. De lithografie De oude ridder uit 1896 maakt deel uit van de laatste reeks werken in zwart. Rond die tijd vinden we niet langer monstrueuze wezens terug die hij in zijn vroegere werk ontleende aan de Japanse kunst en aan de Capriccio’s van Goya. Vanaf dan stelde Redon de zoektocht naar de ideale schoonheid voorop. De ridder, gezien in profiel, wendt zich af van de heldere zone in de diepte waar zich het silhouet van een naakte vrouw aftekent met naast haar een sfinx. Hierbij staat de vrouw symbool voor de vleselijke liefde en de sfinx (waarschijnlijk) voor vreemde religies. Deze vreemde, poëtische evocatie vindt zijn oorsprong in de wereld van Maurice Maeterlinck maar ook in deze van La tentation de Saint Antoine van Gustave Flaubert waarvoor Redon in hetzelfde jaar een reeks etsen publiceerde. Het gebruik van het lithografische zwart in De oude ridder verleent aan de prent een fluwelig karakter. A partir de 1879, Odilon Redon publie ses premiers albums de lithographie à un moment où l’essentiel de son œuvre est marquée par les « noirs » ; fusains, dessins et lithographie qui se caractérisent l’intensité des tons de noir. Redon écrira lui-même que Ces étranges lithographies, souvent sombres, abstruses, et dont l’aspect est peu séducteur, s’adressent à des esprits de silence. Sa production graphique monochrome prendra fin en 1899 pour faire place à un univers plus coloré mais toujours marqué au sceau du mystère. Le vieux chevalier, réalisé en 1896, fait partie d’un dernier ensemble d’œuvres au noir. A cette époque, Redon renonce aux êtres monstrueux issus du japonisme et des Caprices de Goya pour une recherche centrée sur la beauté idéale. Le chevalier, de profil, se détourne de la zone lumineuse située au fond sur laquelle se détachent une silhouette féminine nue et un sphinx symbolisant l’une l’amour charnel et l’autre probablement les religions étrangères. Cette étrange évocation poétique trouve ses sources à la fois dans l’univers de Maeterlinck mais aussi dans celui de La tentation de Saint Antoine de Flaubert pour laquelle Redon publie, cette même année, une troisième suite d’estampes.
