Zich omkerende meisjeskop is ontstaan in Lehmbrucks Parijse periode (1911-14). In die jaren evolueerde hij van een ‘realistische’ stijl naar een grotere expressiviteit en verinnerlijking. Dit zoeken naar een vergeestelijkte, sobere vormgeving heeft Lehmbruck gemeen met Minnes beeldhouwwerk van vóór 1900. Lehmbruck kende het werk van Minne via tentoonstellingen in Duitsland en had er grote bewondering voor. Opmerkelijk hier is de dualiteit in vormgeving en expressie: staat men recht voor het beeld of rechts ervan dan primeren de melancholische uitdrukking en de bijna klassieke schoonheid van het gelaat. Van links bekeken lijkt het gezicht zich als het ware toe te plooien in zichzelf. Het is ook vanuit deze hoek dat de vervorming en de daaruit voortvloeiende spanning het grootste zijn. Wilhelm Lehmbruck est considéré comme l’un des plus grands sculpteurs du 20e siècle. Sa « Tête de jeune fille se retournant » est née lors de sa période parisienne (1911-1914). Pendant ces années, il est passé d’un style réaliste à une plus grande expressivité et intériorisation. Lehmbruck partage cette recherche d’une forme sobre et spiritualisée avec les sculptures de Minne d’avant 1900. Lehmbruck avait vu le travail de Minne dans des expositions en Allemagne et il l’admirait beaucoup. La « Tête de jeune fille se retournant » affiche une dualité remarquable dans sa forme et son expression : en se positionnant en face ou à droite de la sculpture, c’est l’expression mélancolique et la beauté presque classique du visage qui priment. Vu de la gauche, il semble se replier sur lui-même. C’est également depuis cet angle que la distorsion et la tension qui en résulte sont les plus fortes. In the search for a spiritual, sober form Lehmbruck has something in common with the pre-1900 sculpture of Minne. Lehmbruck knew Minne’s work from exhibitions in Germany and admired it greatly. Head of a Girl, turning is remarkable for the duality of form and expression: standing in front of the sculpture or to the right of it, the melancholy expression and classic beauty of the face predominate. Looking from the left, it is almost as though the face turns in on itself. It is also from this viewpoint that the transformation and related fluid tension are at the greatest. Wilhelm Lehmbruck zählt neben den grössten Bildhauern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mädchenkopf sich umwendend entstand in Lehmbrucks Pariser Jahren (1911 – 1914). In dieser Zeit entwickelte sich sein “realistischer” Stil zu grösserer Expressivität und Innerlichkeit. Die Suche nach vergeistigter, schlichter Gestalt hat er mit Minnes Plastiken aus der Zeit vor 1900 gemein. Lehmbruck kannte Minnes Werk von Ausstellungen in Deutschland und bewunderte es sehr. Bemerkenswert an Mädchenkopf sich umwendend ist die Dualität der Gestalt und des Ausdrucks: von vorne oder rechts betrachtet überwiegen der melancholische Ausdruck und die beinahe klassische Schönheit des Antlitzes. Von links gesehen scheint sich das Gesicht sozusagen in sich selbst wegzufalten.
