Verdacht van verraad werd deze edelman door zijn rivaal, de aartsbisschop Ubaldini dei Ruggieri, samen met zijn vier zonen opgesloten in een toren, waar zij allen de hongerdood stierven. Ugolinos lotgevallen werden beschreven door Dante Alighieri (Inferno, Canto 32-33). Het thema was geliefd in de 19de-eeuwse beeldhouwkunst. Zowel Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux als Auguste Rodin verwerkten het tot beeldhouwwerken. Door zijn expressieve uitdrukkingskracht toonde Lambeaux in Ugolino en zijn zonen zijn schatplichtigheid aan Rodin en zijn verwantschap met de getourmenteerde stijl van de jonge George Minne.
