De schriftuur van de kunstenaar wordt bepaald door een uitgesproken zin voor synthese waarbij vormen sterk vereenvoudigen en de deformatie niet geschuwd wordt. Hierdoor is zijn werk uit de naoorlogse periode verwant met het neorealisme Duitsland. Zijn werk behoudt echter een meditatief karakter, vol symboliek en verwondering, en verraadt rond 1930 zelfs surrealistische intenties. In de hier getoonde schilderijen bracht van de Woestyne elementen uit het alledaagse burgerlijke bestaan samen. Als techniek gebruikt hij de gouache, die in het modernisme van de jaren 1920 bijzonder geliefd was. Zoals ‘Stilleven met asplant’ (inv. 2004-H) ontstond ‘Stilleven met wereldbol’ in de vroege jaren 1920. Beide zijn te situeren in de context van de Sélection-beweging en de werking van de galerij Le Centaure in Brussel, in de verzameling van het museum reeds vertegenwoordigd door gouaches van Frits Van den Berghe en Ossip Zadkine. De gouaches van Van de Woestyne behoorden vroeger tot de verzameling De Sutter, een belangrijk mecenas van de kunstenaar. Au cours des années 1920, Gustave Van de Woestyne a intégré les influences du cubisme et de l'expressionnisme dans un compromis personnel. L'écriture de l'artiste est définie par un sens distinct de la synthèse dans lequel les formes sont grandement simplifiées et la déformation n'est pas évitée. Son œuvre de l'après-guerre s'apparente ainsi au néoréalisme et à la Neue Sachlichkeit en Allemagne. Cependant, son œuvre conserve un caractère méditatif, plein de symbolisme et de merveilleux, et trahit même des intentions surréalistes vers 1930. Dans les tableaux présentés ici, van de Woestyne a rassemblé des éléments de l'existence bourgeoise quotidienne. Comme technique, il utilise la gouache, qui était particulièrement populaire dans le modernisme des années 1920. Comme "Nature morte aux cinéraires" (inv. 2004-H), "Nature morte à la mappemonde" a été créée au début des années 1920. Tous deux peuvent être situés dans le contexte du mouvement Sélection et du fonctionnement de la galerie Le Centaure à Bruxelles, représentée dans la collection du musée par des gouaches de Frits Van den Berghe et Ossip Zadkine. Les gouaches de Van de Woestyne appartenaient à la collection De Sutter, un important mécène de l'artiste. During the 1920s, Gustave Van de Woestyne transformed the influences of cubism and expressionism into a personal compromise. The artist’s style is determined by an explicit desire for synthesis whereby forms are strictly simplified without a fear of deformation. As a consequence, his work from the post war period is often associated with the neo-realism of the Neue Sachlichkeit in Germany. However, his work retained a certain meditative character, full of symbolism and wonder, even betraying, around 1930, certain surrealist intentions. In the paintings depicted here, Van de Woestyne brings together several elements from everyday civilian existence. He uses the gouache technique, which modernist artists of the 1920s tended to favour. Like 'Still life with Cineraria' (inv. 2004-H), 'Still Life with a Globe' was created in the early 1920s. Both can be situated in the context of the Sélection movement and the activities of the Le Centaure gallery in Brussels, already represented in the collection of the museum by gouaches by Frits van Van den Berghe and Ossip Zadkine.
