In de volkse devotie kende het verhaal nog in Ensors tijd een bijzondere weerklank door de jaarlijkse kruisweggang op Goede Vrijdag. Ensors ontluisterende kijk op de dood van Christus heeft echter een andere dimensie. In de prent overheerst de dood, met de omstaanders als levende lijken rechts en dreigende duivelfiguren links. Satan omgrijpt zelfs de Christusfiguur, van wie de fysionomie gelijkenissen heeft met die van Ensor zelf. Boven het kruis blaast een vreemdsoortige engel op een trompet. In de achtergrond beeldde de kunstenaar nog een galgenveld af. De ets is grotendeels gebaseerd op een houtskooltekening uit de reeks “De aureolen van Christus uit 1886 (Brussel, KMKSB, inv. 4193). Op de achterzijde van deze tekening betitelde Ensor het werk als volgt: “La triste et brisée. Satan et les légions fantastiques tourmentant le crucifié.” Het eerste deel van de titel heeft betrekking op het effect van het licht, het tweede op het onderwerp. À l'époque d'Ensor, l'histoire avait une résonance particulière dans la dévotion populaire à travers le chemin de croix annuel du Vendredi saint. Cependant, la vision déconcertante d'Ensor sur la mort du Christ a une autre dimension. La mort prédomine dans la gravure, les spectateurs étant des cadavres vivants à droite et des figures diaboliques menaçantes à gauche. Satan s'empare même de la figure du Christ, dont la physionomie ressemble à celle d'Ensor lui-même. Au-dessus de la croix, une sorte d'ange étrange souffle dans une trompette. À l'arrière-plan, l'artiste a représenté un champ de potences. La gravure est largement basée sur un dessin au fusain de la série Les auréoles du Christ de 1886 (Bruxelles, MRBAB, inv. 4193). In Ensor's time, the story had a special resonance in popular devotion through the annual Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. However, Ensor's disconcerting view of Christ's death has another dimension.
