Het thema met een duidelijk satirische en karikaturale inslag is karakteristiek voor Ensors werk uit het begin van de jaren 1890. Ensor gaf aan de voorstelling ook wel de titel “Le ponte déconfit”: dit is een speler tegen de bank, die hier kennelijk temidden van de casinobezoekers aan de verliezende hand is. Van deze prent bestaat ook een vrije versie in lithografie die in het septembernummer 1896 van het tijdschrift La Ligue Artistique werd gepubliceerd. La gravure "Les Joueurs" est basée sur le dessin au crayon du même nom datant d'environ 1890 (collection privée). Ce thème, au ton clairement satirique et caricatural, est caractéristique de l'œuvre d'Ensor du début des années 1890. Ensor a également donné au tableau le titre "Le ponte déconfit" : il s'agit d'un joueur contre la banque, qui semble perdre ici au milieu des visiteurs du casino. Il existe également une version libre de cette gravure en lithographie qui a été publiée dans le numéro de septembre 1896 de la revue La Ligue Artistique. The etching "The Gamblers" is based on the crayon drawing of the same name from around 1890 (private collection). The theme with its clearly satirical and caricatural tone is characteristic of Ensor's work from the early 1890s.
