Deze lange beeldende traditie verwerkte Ensor in de hem eigen typologie. Zoals wel vaker het geval was, herwerkte hij een vrouwenfiguur die (waarschijnlijk) in oorsprong naar model was getekend. Enkele attributen verwijzen naar Maria Magdalena: de schedel links onderaan en het kruis in haar handen. De doodssymboliek sluit aan bij de traditionele iconografische interpretaties van de boetende Magdalena-figuur. In Ensors werk had de schedel een uitgesproken morbide, ironische dan wel fantastische connotatie. Le thème de Marie-Madeleine apparaît dans les arts visuels dès le XIe siècle. Ensor a intégré cette longue tradition visuelle dans sa propre typologie. Comme c'était souvent le cas, il a retravaillé une figure féminine qui avait (probablement) été dessinée à l'origine d'après un modèle. Certains attributs font référence à Marie-Madeleine : le crâne en bas à gauche et la croix dans ses mains. Le symbolisme de la mort s'inscrit dans les interprétations iconographiques traditionnelles de la figure de la Madeleine pénitente. Dans l'œuvre d'Ensor, le crâne avait une connotation morbide, ironique ou fantastique prononcée. The theme of Mary Magdalene appeared in the visual arts as early as the 11th century. Ensor incorporated this long visual tradition into his own typology. As was often the case, he reworked a female figure that had (probably) originally been drawn from a model. Some attributes refer to Mary Magdalene: the skull at the bottom left and the cross in her hands. The death symbolism fits in with the traditional iconographic interpretations of the penitent Magdalene figure.
