Beide Vlamingen werden in 1860 door een Franstalige rechtbank ten onrechte ter dood werden veroordeeld en terechtgesteld. Mogelijk vond Ensors bijtende satire ook zijn oorsprong in meer autobiografische elementen: het faillisssement van zijn vader in 1875, of, toen zeer recent, de rechtszaak tegen Ensors moeder in het kader van een banaal misbruik van copyright. In 1892-1893 stond zij terecht voor de illegale reproductie van een schilderij van de Antwerpse schilder Jan Van Beers. De ets “De goede rechters” is de spiegelbeeldige voorstelling van Ensors gelijknamige schilderij uit 1891 (privé-verzameling). La gravure "Les bons juges" est associée à l'affaire judiciaire controversée Coucke et Goethals. Les deux Flamands ont été injustement condamnés à mort par un tribunal francophone en 1860 et exécutés. Il est possible que la satire mordante d'Ensor trouve également son origine dans des éléments plus autobiographiques : la faillite de son père en 1875, ou, très récemment à l'époque, le procès intenté à la mère d'Ensor dans le cadre d'un banal abus de droit d'auteur. En 1892-1893, elle est jugée pour la reproduction illégale d'un tableau du peintre anversois Jan Van Beers.
