Het thema van de liefdestuin heeft Ensor vermoedelijk ontleend aan het werk van Antoine Watteau dat hij van reproducties kende. De prent vertoont sterke overeenkomsten met “Les Jaloux”, een verloren gegaan schilderij van Watteau, waarvan de voorstelling in prent is bekend. Het museum bezit verschillende staten van de ets, waaronder één ingekleurde versie. "Votre Jardin d'amour est délicieux", a écrit Emma Lambotte, amie d'Ensor, lorsqu'elle a reçu cette gravure élaborée d'Ensor. Ensor a colorié de nombreuses impressions et est parfois allé si loin que l'on ne voit plus grand-chose de l'impression originale et qu'une nouvelle "peinture" a été créée, pour ainsi dire.
