Bovenaan links prikt een figuur in het oog van een olifant, die op zijn beurt een figuur opslokt en een andere figuur – mogelijk een kruisvaarder – heeft vermorzeld. Tegelijk duwt de olifant met zijn vreemdsoortige slurf tegen het achterwerk van een staande figuur in het midden, die door de schok tegen een andere figuur aanvliegt. Achter deze laatste ligt een wanstaltig wezen, van wie het gehele lichaam door etterbuilen is overdekt. In het middenplan rechts staat een kanon opgesteld dat een aanstormende kudde olifanten beschiet. Het enigmatische karakter van de ets herinnert aan de fantastiek van Ensors etsen De cataclysmen en Tovenaars in de stormwind (inv. 1998-B-37 en 52). La gravure "La Blague de l'éléphant" est l'une des plus fantastiques gravures d'Ensor. En haut à gauche, un personnage s'enfonce dans l'œil d'un éléphant, qui a lui-même avalé un personnage et en a écrasé un autre - peut-être un croisé. Au même moment, l'éléphant pousse avec son étrange trompe contre l'arrière-train d'un personnage debout au milieu, qui, sous l'effet du choc, vole dans un autre personnage. Derrière ce dernier se cache une créature monstrueuse dont le corps entier est recouvert de pus. Dans le plan central de droite, un canon est positionné pour tirer sur un troupeau d'éléphants qui arrive. Le caractère énigmatique de la gravure rappelle la fantaisie des gravures d'Ensor Les Cataclysmes et Sorciers dans la bourrasque (inv. 1998-B-37 et 52).
