Van de lugubere voorstelling van de illustratie in het tijdschrift, waarin twee mannen met een handzaag de arm van een dode doorzagen en zijn bloed in een emmer sijpelt, maakte Ensor een lugubere, maar tegelijk burleske parodie. L'estampe "L'Assasinat" a probablement été inspirée par un article et une illustration de la revue Le Journal Illustré du 27 mai 1888. Ensor a transformé la représentation lugubre de l'illustration du magazine, dans laquelle deux hommes scient le bras d'un homme mort avec une scie à main et son sang s'écoule dans un seau, en une parodie à la fois lugubre et burlesque.
