Het fabeldier wordt doorgaans voorgesteld met het hoofd van een leeuw, het lichaam van een geit en de staart van een slang. Waarschijnlijk baseerde Ensor zich op een dekselknop van een Oosterse siervaas, bewaard in het atelier of het huis van de schilder; van zijn Oostendse jeugdvriend Willy Finch is een realistische tekening van hetzelfde siervoorwerp bekend (Doornik, Musée des Beaux-Arts). In Ensors prent is het hoofd van de man rechts naast het beeld mogelijk dat van Ernest Rousseau. La créature mythique est généralement représentée avec la tête d'un lion, le corps d'une chèvre et la queue d'un serpent. The mythical creature is usually represented with the head of a lion, the body of a goat and the tail of a snake. Ensor probably based his work on the knob of a cover of an Oriental ornamental vase that was kept in the painter's studio or house; his childhood friend Willy Finch from Ostend has a realistic drawing of the same ornamental object (Tournai, Musée des Beaux-Arts).
