De voorstelling verwijst naar het schilderij “De val der opstandige engelen” van Pieter Bruegel (Brussel, Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België), de ets “De verzoeking van de heilige Antonius” van Jacques Callot en de fantastische figuren van Jheronimus Bosch. De ets is bovenal een hoogtepunt in Ensors eigen fantastische vormentaal. Cette gravure est l'une des plus audacieuses de l'œuvre graphique d'Ensor. Il fait référence au tableau "La Chute des anges rebelles" de Pieter Bruegel (Bruxelles, Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique), à la gravure "La Tentation de saint Antoine" de Jacques Callot et aux figures fantastiques de Hieronymus Bosch. L'eau-forte est avant tout une mise en évidence du fantastique langage des formes propre à Ensor. This etching is one of the most daring in Ensor's graphic oeuvre.
