De uitgave verscheen in 1935 bij de Brusselse uitgever Editions des Artistes op 396 exemplaren. Er bestaan 25 genummerde exemplaren op Japans paarlemoerpapier, in sanguine afgedrukt. Voor de prent baseerde Ensor zich op Van Offels kortverhaal over het heiligenleven van Saint-Charmant, een heremiet die door de duivel werd belaagd. De duivel slaagde erin de inwoners van het nabije dorp tegen Saint-Charmant op te zetten, en de heilige werd aan de wieken van een molen vastgebonden. Door een stormwind maakten de molenwieken zich van de molen los en zo werd Saint-Charmant ten hemel gevoerd. Ensor destinait la gravure "Le Diable au moulin" à l'édition bibliophile d'un recueil d'histoires de l'écrivain anversois Horace Van Offel (1878-1944). L'édition a été publiée en 1935 par l'éditeur bruxellois Editions des Artistes en 396 exemplaires. Il existe 25 exemplaires numérotés sur papier nacré japonais, imprimés en sanguine. Ensor a basé la gravure sur la nouvelle de Van Offel sur la vie sainte de Saint-Charmant, une mite d'honneur assiégée par le diable. Le diable réussit à dresser les habitants du village voisin contre Saint-Charmant, et le saint fut attaché aux voiles d'un moulin à vent. Un vent de tempête emporta les voiles du moulin et Saint-Charmant fut emporté au ciel. Ensor intended the print 'The Devil and the Windmill' for the bibliophile edition of a collection of stories by the Antwerp writer Horace Van Offel (1878-1944). The devil succeeded in setting the inhabitants of the nearby village against Saint-Charmant, and the saint was tied to the sails of a windmill.
