Deze prent gaat waarschijnlijk terug op een tekening die Ensor in de vroege jaren 1880 maakte. De thematiek intrigeerde in deze periode ook Willy Finch, Ensors Oostendse jeugdvriend. De tweede staat van deze prent werd in 1910 gepubliceerd in het album van de Antwerpse kunstenaarsvereniging Kunst van Heden. Ensor a utilisé à plusieurs reprises la vie populaire à Ostende comme sujet de peintures, dessins et gravures. Cette eau-forte remonte probablement à un dessin qu'Ensor a fait au début des années 1880. Ce thème a également intrigué Willy Finch, l'ami d'enfance d'Ensor, originaire d'Ostende, à cette époque. Ensor repeatedly used popular life in Ostend as the subject of paintings, drawings and etchings. This print probably goes back to a drawing Ensor made in the early 1880s.
