Het Kasselrijhuis is in die tijd een leenhof van het graafschap Vlaanderen, gelegen binnen de omwalling van het Gravensteen. Een jaar later sieren de tapijten de wanden van de grote collegezaal. Het wapen van de Oudburg, een sabel met een gevoegde poort van zilver gehouden door een geleeuwde luipaard, zien we op elk tapijt bovenaan in het midden. Tijdens de Franse Revolutie wordt het College van de Oudburg afgeschaft en het Kasselrijhuis gesloopt. Na een aantal omzwervingen krijgt de reeks uiteindelijk in 1904 een plaats in de erezaal van het Museum voor Schone Kunsten. De zonnegod Apollo zit op de aan hem gewijde berg Parnassus aan de rand van het bos en bespeelt, omgeven door zes muzen, zijn favoriet instrument, de lier. Als schepper van de goddelijke muziek is hij getooid met een lauwerkrans. Een muze speelt dwarsfluit, een andere viola da gamba. De vier andere muzen zingen in koor. In de verte ontwaren we te midden van een arcadisch landschap drie vaag weergegeven figuren, vermoedelijk de overige drie van de negen muzen. De muzen staan voor wijsheid, welsprekendheid, een vredig gemoed en de gave om de daden van goden en mensen te bezingen. De verheerlijking van Apollo is een directe ode aan de beschaving. En 1716, la Kasselrijhuis d’Oudburg à Gand commande une série de cinq tapisseries représentant la glorification des dieux. À l’époque, la Kasselrijhuis est une propriété du comté de Flandre, située à l’intérieur des remparts du Château des Comtes. Un an plus tard, les tapisseries ornent les murs de la grande salle de réception. Les armoiries de l’Oudburg, un sabre avec une porte d’argent tenue par un lion, se trouvent dans le haut de chaque tapisserie, au milieu. Pendant la Révolution française, le Collège de l’Oudburg a été dissolu et la Kasselrijhuis démolie. Après plusieurs péripéties, la série s’est vu offrir une place dans la salle d’honneur du Musée des Beaux-Arts en 1904. Le dieu du soleil Apollon est assis sur le mont Parnasse, qui lui est dédié, à la lisière de la forêt et joue, entouré de six muses, de son instrument préféré, la lyre. En tant que créateur de la musique divine, il porte une couronne de laurier. Une muse joue de la flûte traversière et une autre de la viole de gambe. Les quatre autres muses chantent en chœur. Au loin, on entrevoit, au milieu d’un paysage arcadien, trois personnages représentés de façon vague. Il s’agit vraisemblablement des trois dernières des neuf muses. Les muses incarnent la sagesse, l’éloquence, un esprit tranquille et le don de chanter les actes des dieux et des hommes. La glorification d’Apollon est une ode directe à la civilisation. In 1716, the Viscounty of the Oudburg in Ghent commissioned a series of tapestries devoted to the Exaltation of the Gods. The Viscounty was a fief of the County of Flanders, located within the walls of the Counts’ Castle. Barely a year later, the tapestries were hung in the Castellany. The Oudburg arms appears in the middle of each tapestry. Oudburg College was closed down during the period of French revolutionary occupation and the Viscounty building was demolished. The series ended up in the Museum of Fine Art in 1904, having had several homes in the interim. The second tapestry shows The Exaltation of Apollo. The Sun God sits at the edge of a wood on Parnassus – the mountain dedicated to him. He strums his favourite instrument, the lyre, while surrounded by six muses who play music and sing. He wears a laurel crown as the creator of divine music. Three vaguely represented figures can be made out in the midst of an Arcadian landscape. They probably represent the remaining three of the nine muses of Antiquity. The muses were a symbol of wisdom, eloquence, even temper and the ability to sing the praises of gods and humans.
