Alhoewel hij met zijn vroegere kompanen bleef tentoonstellen, beëindigde hij in zijn hoofd de relatie met Latemse en met het expressionisme. Met Het monster begaf hij zich op het terrein van een nieuwe realiteit die buiten het reële staat, het surreële. Zonderlinge wezens maken hun opwachting. Ze verbeelden de angst van de mens voor de geheimzinnigheid van de realiteit. In dezelfde periode schildert hij ook heksen en duivels, fantastische bloemstukken en ‘wangedrochtelijke’ bomen in een toverachtig groen licht, waarin zijn latere surrealistische werken worden aangekondigd. Hierbij is het monster de belichaming van de dreigende macht van het onderbewuste. Het wordt hier voorgesteld als een gespierde gewichtheffer. Zijn ontbloot bovenlijf vloeit over in zijn bovenmaatse hoofd. Het monster wordt omringd door verbaasde personages die door de onbestemde ruimte zweven. Hun twijfelende geest wordt uitgebeeld in een weinig gestructureerde compositie, een nerveuze toets en een ongebruikelijk pallet van roze, paars en groen.
