Karel vertoont de typische fysionomie van de Habsburgers. Op zijn borst draagt hij de ketting van de orde van het Gulden Vlies - de jonge aartshertog is in 1501 op éénjarige leeftijd ridder van deze orde geworden! In de bestaande literatuur wordt sinds het einde van de 19de eeuw aan deze buste de naam verbonden van Conrad Meit (ca. 1480 -1551). Deze Duitse kunstenaar is hofbeeldhouwer van Karels tante, Margaretha van Oostenrijk. Meit is actief in de Nederlanden van ca. 1512 tot aan zijn dood. Stilistisch houdt deze toeschrijving echter geen stand. Conrad Meit is een uitmuntende beeldhouwer die in opdracht van Margaretha van Oostenrijk zowel portretten van haar als van haar jong overleden echtgenoot Philibert van Savoye maakt, uitgevoerd hetzij in marmer hetzij in hout. Deze portretten zijn bijzonder levendig en getuigen van een grote virtuositeit in de karakteruitbeelding, dit in tegenstelling tot de replieken uit de musea van Gent en Brugge. Deze worden gekarakteriseerd door een vrij strak en droog modelé en een bijna schematische gelaatsweergave. Dans la littérature existante, le nom de Conrad Meit (ca. 1480 -1551) est lié à ce buste depuis la fin du 19ème siècle. Cet artiste allemand était le sculpteur de la cour de la tante de Charles, Marguerite d'Autriche. Meit a été actif dans les Pays-Bas de 1512 environ jusqu'à sa mort. D'un point de vue stylistique, cependant, cette attribution ne tient pas. Conrad Meit est un excellent sculpteur qui, sur ordre de Marguerite d'Autriche, a réalisé des portraits d'elle et de son défunt mari Philibert de Savoie, en marbre ou en bois.
