In dit schilderij is dat niet anders. Toch zet Alice Frey de traditioneel mannelijke blik hier op spanning. Hoewel de afgebeelde vrouwen naakt zijn en zich in een maatschappelijk precaire situatie bevinden, is de sfeer merkbaar ontspannen in het besloten interieur, omgeven door een kamerscherm en verhullende gordijnen. Hier geen geïdealiseerde naakten of flaterende poses. Frey schept bovenal een wereld van vrouwelijke verbondenheid en bevraagt hiermee machtsstructuren die via de blik worden bevestigd of net ontregeld. Het schilderij nodigt uit om na te denken over wie kijkt en wie bekeken wordt. Wanneer ben je veilig, legaal, verbonden, thuis? Le voyeurisme auquel nous nous livrons en contemplant des scènes de harem orientalistes n’est pas purement et simplement érotique, mais il touche aussi au positionnement et à la représentation que nous avons de l’autre. Ce tableau ne fait pas exception à la règle. Il n’empêche qu’Alice Frey met ici en tension le regard traditionnellement masculin porté sur ces scènes. Bien que les femmes soient nues et se trouvent dans une situation sociale précaire, l’ambiance est étonnamment détendue dans cet intérieur clos entouré d’un paravent et de rideaux occultants. Ici, pas de nus idéalisés ou de poses flatteuses. Frey crée avant tout un univers de solidarité féminine, questionnant ainsi les structures de pouvoir qui sont confirmées ou au contraire bouleversées par le regard. Le tableau invite à une réflexion sur qui regarde et qui est regardé. Quand est-on en sécurité, dans son bon droit, en lien avec les autres, chez soi ? The voyeurism to which we are guilty as viewers of Orientalist harem scenes is not purely erotic, but also focused on the positioning and representation of the other. That is no different in this painting. Yet Alice Frey puts the traditional male gaze under strain. Although the depicted women are naked and find themselves in a socially precarious situation, the atmosphere is noticeably relaxed in this private interior, surrounded by a folding screen and concealing curtains. No idealised nudes or flattering poses here. Above all, Frey creates a world of female solidarity and thereby questions power structures that are either confirmed or disrupted by the gaze. The painting invites us to think about who is looking and who is being looked at.
