Zij was de jongste dochter van kunstmecenas Emile Van Mons en zus van Camille, van wie Van Rysselberghe op dat ogenblik eveneens een portret schilderde (Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hannover). De portretten kwamen tot stand kort na het overlijden van de moeder van de meisjes en zijn opgedragen aan hun vader. Marguerite Van Mons zou later huwen met Thomas Braun, advocaat, dichter en verzamelaar. Dit portret behoort tot een reeks overgangswerken die dateren uit de jaren 1885–1887. Tijdens deze periode tastte Van Rysselberghe verschillende stijlmogelijkheden af vooraleer hij zich vanaf 1888 tot het pointillisme bekeerde. Een aantal werken uit deze periode baden in een symbolistische en melancholische sfeer. De geometrische achtergrond en het aftasten van de mogelijkheden van de zwarte kleur getuigen van een invloed van James Abbott McNeill Whistler, vanaf 1884 invité bij Les Vingt. De verfijnde techniek en het lichte, coloriet roepen een verwantschap op met de portretten van Fernand Khnopff. Théo Van Rysselberghe a réalisé le Portrait de Marguerite Van Mons en 1886, alors que la fillette était âgée de 10 ans. Elle était la fille cadette du mécène d’art Emile Van Mons, et la sœur de Camille, dont Van Rysselberghe réalisa aussi un portrait à cette époque (Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum de Hanovre). Les portraits des filles ont été réalisés peu après le décès de leur mère, et sont dédiés à leur père. Marguerite Van Mons se mariera plus tard avec Thomas Braun, avocat, poète et collectionneur. Ce portrait fait partie d’une série d’œuvres de transition qui datent des années 1885–1887. Pendant cette période, Van Rysselberghe s’essaie à différentes possibilités de style avant de se tourner, à partir de 1888, vers le pointillisme. Un certain nombre d’œuvres de cette période baignent dans une atmosphère symboliste et mélancolique. L’arrière-plan géométrique et l’exploration des possibilités de la couleur noire témoignent de l’influence de James Abbott McNeill Whistler, invité par Les Vingt dès 1884. La technique raffinée et les couleurs légères évoquent une parenté avec les portraits de Fernand Khnopff. Théo Van Rysselberghe painted the Portrait of Marguerite Van Mons in 1886 when the girl was ten years old. She was the youngest daughter of the art patron, Emile Van Mons and the sister of Camille, whose portrait Van Rysselberghe was painting simultaneously (Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hannover). The portraits were painted soon after the girls’ mother had died and are dedicated to their father. Marguerite Van Mons would subsequently marry Thomas Braun, a lawyer, poet and collector. This portrait is part of a series of transitional works, dating from 1885–1887. During this period Van Rysselberghe tried his hand at various styles before converting to pointillism in 1888. The mood of some of the works from this period tended to be rather melancholic and symbolist. The geometric background and Van Rysselberghe’s experiments with the colour black indicate that he was inspired by James McNeill Whistler, who was invited to exhibit with Les Vingt from 1884 onwards.
