Onder meer het thema van vliegende, zwevende en vallende figuren komt herhaaldelijk terug als evocatie van het geestelijke. Emile Langui, de eerste biograaf van de kunstenaar en een hechte vriend, sprak van een dwangvoorstelling die de kunstenaar jarenlang achtervolgde. In De val der heiligen stortte hij met een wraakzuchtige pret monniken en naakte vrouwenlichamen in de diepte. Dit was zijn manier om de valse schijn van een verdorven mensheid aan de kaak te stellen. De sterke bewogenheid van de figuren en de diagonale compositie doen denken aan de barokke dramatiek van Rubens' Val der verdoemden. Technisch draagt het doek de sporen van de écriture automatique van Max Ernst. 'Meermaals hebben wij hem gevraagd, toen hij koortsachtig aan het tekenen was,' schrijft Langui, 'wat het ding worden moest, waarop hij zonder een zweem van aanstellerij antwoordde, dat hij het zelf nog niet wist.’ Andere auteurs wijzen op een ander veel voorkomend thema in zijn oeuvre, dat van de strijd tussen man en vrouw. Ontegensprekelijk had deze fascinatie autobiografische gronden – Van den Berghe leefde een tijd gescheiden van zijn gezin – en de strijd der geslachten kan ook hier als een duistere ondertoon van het schilderij geanalyseerd worden. Techniquement, la toile porte les traces de l'écriture automatique de Max Ernst. Plus d'une fois nous lui avons demandé, alors qu'il dessinait fébrilement, écrit Langui, ce que devait être la chose, ce à quoi il a répondu, sans la moindre posture, qu'il ne savait pas encore. D'autres auteurs soulignent un autre thème commun à son œuvre, celui de la lutte entre l'homme et la femme. Indéniablement, cette fascination avait des motifs autobiographiques - Van den Berghe a vécu séparé de sa femme et de ses enfants pendant un certain temps - et la lutte des sexes peut également être analysée ici comme un sombre sous-entendu de la peinture.
