De kunstenaar schept een mysterieuze sfeer door zich af te beelden met het hoofddeksel ver over het hoofd getrokken, zodat de schaduw van de rand zijn blik verdoezelt. Alle aandacht gaat naar de jeugdige wangen, de wilskrachtige neus en kin en het sensuele mondje met de pijp. We zien hier al iets van de dandy die we kennen uit zijn brieven en latere zelfportretten.
