Tot voor kort beschouwd als een werk van de hand van een anonieme Keulse meester, wordt het nu gesitueerd in de omgeving van een Brugse meester, hetzij de Meester van de legende van de heilige Ursula, hetzij de Meester van de legende van de heilige Lucia, beiden tijdgenoten van Hans Memling. Hiervoor baseert men zich op frappante overeenkomsten in stijl en compositie. De compositie die we hier aantreffen is aan het einde van de vijftiende eeuw blijkbaar erg geliefd in Brugge. Aan weerszijden van Maria's troon zitten de schenkers geknield in gebedshouding. Achter hen staan de beschermheiligen met hun attributen: Johannes de Doper met het lam en Barbara met de toren, waarin zij volgens de legende door haar vader werd opgesloten. De schenkers zijn naar algemeen middeleeuws gebruik aanzienlijk kleiner voorgesteld dan de heiligen. Jusqu'à récemment, elle était considérée comme une œuvre de la main d'un maître anonyme de Cologne, mais elle est maintenant placée dans l'environnement d'un maître de Bruges, soit le Maître de la Légende de Sainte Ursule, soit le Maître de la Légende de Sainte Lucie, tous deux contemporains de Hans Memling. Ceci est basé sur des similitudes frappantes dans le style et la composition. La composition que nous trouvons ici était apparemment très populaire à Bruges à la fin du 15e siècle. De chaque côté du trône de Marie, les donateurs sont agenouillés en prière. Derrière eux se trouvent les saints patrons avec leurs attributs : Jean-Baptiste avec l'agneau et Barbara avec la tour, dans laquelle, selon la légende, elle a été enfermée par son père.
