Deze houding tijdens de Duitse bezetting kwam hem duur te staan want na de wapenstilstand moest hij opnieuw het land ontvluchten en ontnam de Gentse gemeenteraad hem zijn benoeming tot leraar aan de academie. Na de oorlog vinden we hem terug in Nederland tussen een groep verbannen activisten waaronder de dichter René De Clercq en de beeldhouwer Jozef Cantré. Dit zelfportret uit 1919 is een voorstudie voor het grote werk De bannelingen. Rond de centrale figuur van De Clercq groepeert de kunstenaar een aantal vrienden onder wie Cantré, Victor De Knop en zichzelf. Cette attitude pendant l'occupation allemande lui a coûté cher, car après l'armistice, il a dû fuir à nouveau le pays et le conseil municipal de Gand l'a privé de sa nomination comme professeur à l'académie. Après la guerre, il retourne aux Pays-Bas parmi un groupe de militants exilés, dont le poète René De Clercq et le sculpteur Jozef Cantré. Cet autoportrait de 1919 est une étude préliminaire à la grande œuvre Les Exilés.
