De uitwijkelingen hadden geregeld contact met elkaar en de zwartogige Fortuna Brulez-Mavromati inspireerde Van den Berghe tot een van zijn meest expressionistische portretten. De kunstenaar maakte twee varianten die aan het uiteindelijke portret voorafgaan. Naar een van de portretten maakte hij ook een linosnede. Iedere variant bezit een zelfstandige kwaliteit, maar toch is er in elk volgend werk een evolutie naar een steviger structuur en een grotere dynamiek. De herhaling van hetzelfde onderwerp tot hij de gewenste expressie bereikte, is een werkwijze die Van den Berghe vaak toepaste. De versie uit het Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent is de eerste van de twee 'voorbereidende' varianten en heeft nog het karakter van een onafgewerkte studie, hoewel de figuur zelf bijna volledig is uitgewerkt in zwaar aangebrachte verflagen. Het fauvistisch kleurgebruik en het expressief opgemaakte gelaat vinden we terug bij de Russische expressionist Alexej von Jawlensky, terwijl ook de vrouwenportretten van Kees van Dongen en Jan Sluijters hem zeker hebben beïnvloed. Zoals bij de portretten van Jawlensky overstijgt ook dit portret de eenvoudige weergave van een welbepaald individu. Het wordt een icoon van de onbereikbare, niet te doorgronden vrouw. Het is het begin van een steeds terugkerende thematiek waarin de problematische man-vrouw relatie gestalte krijgt. Die voor hem wezenlijke problematiek zal Van den Berghe niet meer in portretten uitdrukken, maar in taferelen waarbij de vrouw naakt en vaak zonder hoofd worden voorgesteld, soms met humor en milde zelfspot, gaandeweg echter met een bitterheid die zijn ontgoocheling in de mens niet verhult. La version du Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand est la première des deux variantes "préparatoires" et présente encore clairement le caractère d'une étude inachevée, bien que la figure elle-même soit presque entièrement élaborée dans des couches de peinture fortement appliquées. L'utilisation fauviste de la couleur et le maquillage expressif du visage remontent à l'expressionniste russe Alexej von Jawlensky, tandis que les portraits féminins de Kees van Dongen et Jan Sluijters l'ont certainement aussi influencé. Comme les portraits de Jawlensky, celui-ci transcende la simple représentation d'un individu particulier. Il devient une icône de la femme inaccessible, insondable. C'est le début d'un thème récurrent dans lequel la relation problématique homme-femme prend forme.
