Hij was ingeschreven als tekenaar en volgde verschillende ateliers. Tijdens het academiejaar 1878–1879 frequenteerde de jonge kunstenaar de ateliers ‘Antiek beeld’ van Théodore Canneel en ‘Ontleedkunde’ bij Joseph Morel. Voor het jaar 1879–1880 schreef hij zich in voor de praktijklessen ‘Levend model’ bij Canneel en ‘Ontleedkunde’ van Morel, en volgde hij de mondelinge cursussen ‘Bouwkunde’ en ‘Doorzichtkunde’, beiden gedoceerd door Joseph De Waele. Als jonge academiestudent kreeg Van Rysselberghe de mogelijkheid om in het Museum voor Schone Kunsten te werken. De museumcollectie was op dat ogenblik geherbergd in de gebouwen van de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten. Van Rysselberghe realiseerde er een kopie naar een stilleven van de Nederlandse kunstenares Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen. Het werk is 1880 gedateerd en kwam vermoedelijk kort voor Van Rysselberghes vertrek naar Brussel tot stand. Pendant deux ans, de 1878 à 1880, Théo Van Rysselberghe suit des cours du soir à l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Gand. Il y est inscrit comme dessinateur et participe à différents ateliers. Pendant l’année académique 1878–1879, le jeune artiste fréquente les ateliers ‘Statues antiques’ de Théodore Canneel et ‘Anatomie’ de Joseph Morel. Pour l’année 1879–1880, il s’inscrit aux cours pratiques de ‘Modèle vivant’ chez Canneel et d’‘Anatomie’ chez Morel, et suit les cours oraux ‘Construction’ et ‘Etude de la transparence’, tous deux donnés par Joseph De Waele. En tant que jeune étudiant de l’Académie, Van Rysselberghe bénéficie de l’opportunité de travailler au Musée des Beaux-Arts. La collection du musée était à cette époque hébergée dans les bâtiments de l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. Van Rysselberghe y réalise la copie d’une nature morte de l’artiste hollandaise Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen. L’œuvre est datée de 1880 et a probablement été réalisée peu de temps avant le départ de Van Rysselberghe pour Bruxelles. Théo Van Rysselberghe took evening classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Ghent for two years, from 1878 until 1880. He had registered as a draughtsman and attended various studios. During the 1878–1879 academic year the young artist studied with Théodore Canneel (antique model) and with Joseph Morel (Anatomy). In 1879–1880 he registered for the ‘Life’ classes with Canneel and for ‘Anatomy’ with Morel and attended two instructed classes, ‘Architecture’ and ‘Perspective’ which were both taught by Joseph De Waele. As a young academy student Van Rysselberghe was given the opportunity to work in the Museum of Fine Arts. At the time the museum’s collection was preserved in the buildings of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Van Rysselberghe painted this copy of a still-life by the Dutch artist, Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen.
