Het volle lichaam van de vrouw in Moederschap doet denken aan de primitieve beeldjes van vruchtbaarheidsgodinnen. Opmerkelijk is het contrast tussen de scherpe lijnen van het gelaat links en het meer uitgewerkte gedeelte ervan rechts, wat de indruk wekt van een gelaat tegelijk in voor- en zijaanzicht. Ook voor het lichaam van de moeder en voor het kind gebruikte Permeke verschillende technieken: transparante kleurschakeringen naast zwaar aangebrachte partijen, stevige omlijningen voor de moeder naast een subtiele tekening voor het kind. Die werkwijze, die herinnert aan Picasso, paste Permeke vanaf de jaren 1920 geregeld toe.
