Paneel en omlijsting zijn, net als bij het vierlobbige medaillon, uit één stuk eikenhout gesneden. In de vijftiende eeuw werden dergelijke devotiestukken in groot aantal geproduceerd en op de markt gebracht. De schilders van deze paneeltjes namen vaak bestaande compositieschema’s over. De voorstelling die we hier zien, is ontleend aan Rogier van der Weyden. Le panneau du Maître de la légende de Sainte-Madeleine était destiné à un salon ou à une chambre à coucher. Le panneau et le cadre sont, comme pour le médaillon quadrilobé, sculptés dans une seule pièce de chêne. Au XVe siècle, ces pièces dévotionnelles sont produites et commercialisées en grand nombre. Les peintres de ces panneaux ont souvent copié des schémas de composition existants. La représentation que nous voyons ici est empruntée à Rogier van der Weyden. The Master’s panel portraying the legend of St Mary Magdalene was intended for a living room or bedroom. As in the four-lobed medallion, the panel and frame are carved out of a single piece of oak. A great many devotional works like this were produced and put on the market in the fifteenth century. The artists who painted them often used existing compositions.
