In 1927 stelde Ernst tentoon bij Le Centaure en een jaar later bij L’Epoque. Ook Frits Van den Berghe exposeerde geregeld bij die Brusselse galeries. Daar leerde hij ongetwijfeld de surrealistische materie-effecten van Max Ernst kennen. Het vreemde, hologige standbeeld in Het zingende beeld verwijst waarschijnlijk naar De gelukkige prins, een sprookje van Oscar Wilde. Het standbeeld van de eens zo gelukkige en nu dode prins overschouwt de ellende van zijn volk. Overmand door medelijden roept hij de hulp in van een zwaluw om zijn kostbaarheden aan de armen uit te delen. De vogel pikt de edelstenen uit de ogen van het beeld en haalt het goud er in laagjes af. Het beeld is lelijk geworden, maar zingt het uit van vreugde om de weldaden die het zijn volk heeft gebracht. La Statue qui chante de Frits Van den Berghe porte clairement des traces de l’écriture automatique de Max Ernst. En 1927, Ernst exposa à la galerie Le Centaure et un an plus tard à L’Epoque. Frits Van den Berghe exposa, lui aussi, régulièrement dans ces galeries bruxelloises. C’est assurément là qu’il découvrit les effets de matière surréalistes d’Ernst. Dans La Statue qui chante, l’étrange personnage aux yeux vides renvoie vraisemblablement à un conte d’Oscar Wilde, Le Prince Heureux. La statue de celui qui avant sa mort fut un prince comblé contemple la misère de son peuple. Touché de compassion, il implore le secours d’une hirondelle pour distribuer ses joyaux aux pauvres. L’oiseau pique les pierres précieuses dont sont sertis les yeux de la statue et en ôte l’or couche par couche. Devenue laide, la statue chante néanmoins de bonheur tant elle est heureuse d’avoir comblé son peuple de bienfaits. The Singing Statue by Frits Van den Berghe is clearly influenced by Max Ernst’s ‘écriture automatique’. In 1927 Ernst exhibited his work at Le Centaure and a year later at L’Epoque. These galleries in Brussels also regularly exhibited Frits Van den Berghe’s work. Here he almost certainly encountered Max Ernst’s surrealistic material effects. The strange hollow-eyed figure in The Singing Statue probably refers to The Happy Prince, a fairytale by Oscar Wilde. The statue of the prince, once so happy but now dead, observes the misery of his people. Overcome with pity the prince calls on a swallow for help in distributing his riches among the poor. The bird pecks out the precious jewels that serve as the statue’s eyes and removes the gold that covers it, layer by layer.
